Your search for purpose isn’t the problem. Where you’re looking is.
“What is life all about?” The is the central question that everyone, at some point, must confront. The pursuit of meaning: why we are here and what we’re meant to do, is universal. It’s a question that, when left unanswered, can lead to despair, as it does for some people who seem to have everything to live for yet take their own lives. Sometimes even leaving behind a note “I have no reason to continue living. My life has no meaning.”
What is the purpose of my life? The answer to this question is more urgent than we often realize because we only get one life. We cannot simply throw it away or restart. Once it’s gone, it’s gone for eternity. So, what is the point of life?
Living With Purpose
Many people live without ever asking themselves the question of purpose. Yet, this very question is foundational to human existence. In nature, animals don’t ask “why”. A cow doesn’t wonder about the meaning of its life, no, it knows it’s here to give milk or meat. But humans are different. We are unique in our ability to reflect on our existence, to ask, What is life all about?
The Answer We Are All Searching For
So, what is the answer to this great question of life? Who can give us a satisfying answer? The world, with all its distractions, can’t provide it. Philosophers, scientists, and even pastors are in the same boat if they don’t have God’s answer. But there is one who knows why we are here: God. He is the Creator of life and the only one who can answer the question of its purpose.
Through revelation, God has made it clear why we exist. The Bible gives us the answer. Our purpose is to become children of God. Just as a father takes joy in his children, so God made us to be in relationship with Him. He created us to speak with Him, to love Him, and to be loved by Him. This is the very meaning of our existence.
We Are Not Born as Children of God
The tragedy of the human condition is that we are not born as children of God. Our first parents, Adam and Eve, were created in God’s image but chose to live independently of Him. Their choice to disobey God and eat the forbidden fruit marked the beginning of humanity’s separation from God. This choice created a world where people were born distant from God and estranged from the very source of life.
We cannot simply will ourselves into being children of God. Something has to happen for that relationship to be restored. We need a way back to the Father. Without this, life remains meaningless, and the weight of our separation from God continues to burden us.
Jesus Christ provides the solution
The good news is that God provided a way. He didn’t leave us without an answer. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to bridge the gap between us and Him. Through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, we are given the right to become children of God. As the Bible says, “To all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” (John 1:12)
Jesus is the answer to the question, What is life all about? Through Him, we find our purpose: to be restored to God and to live in a relationship with Him. Jesus came not only to give us eternal life but to give us life that is meaningful, filled with purpose, and rooted in the love of the Father.
The Call to Receive Jesus
You can’t find this purpose by looking inward or chasing after worldly achievements. No amount of success, pleasure, or knowledge will answer the question of why you exist. The only way to know your true purpose is to receive Jesus into your life.
This is not just a religious statement; it’s the truth of why you are here. The moment you receive Jesus, your life takes on eternal meaning. You no longer live aimlessly but with a clear, God-given purpose. Jesus doesn’t just add meaning to life, He is the meaning of life.
1 Question for you
What will you do with this answer? Will you continue searching for meaning in things that don’t last? Will you keep searching for meaning in work, achievements, or even good things like family and community? While some of these things are good to have, they can only take you so far. The peace you’re chasing always seems just out of reach.
Peace isn’t a destination, it’s a person.
Why not embrace the answer that gives you peace, purpose, and eternal life in Christ?
Jesus Christ offers Himself. He is the peace that lasts, the purpose that transforms, and the eternal life that anchors you through everything. He is knocking at the door of your heart, waiting for you to receive Him: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in…” (Revelation 3:20).
The question is, will you let Him in?
